Guidelines for the design of lighting in residential buildings used by people with dementia are derived from the results of two research projects and a literature review. General guidance on lighting for the older person is summarised and the special requirements of those living with dementia are examined under four headings: the diurnal cycle, a view of nature and the outside world, support for individual and social activities, and recognition of place.

The aim is a visual environment that enhances physical well-being and enjoyment of life.
