Education: the key to the future of lighting practice

This lecture discusses what needs to be done to raise the quality of lighting in functional interiors from indifferent to good. The basic problem is identified as a concentration on maximizing visual performance and minimizing visual discomfort, together with a neglect of the visual environment. The solution to this problem lies in the education of lighting designers, specifiers and legislators. Some of this education is little more than a careful restatement of existing knowledge. Some requires more research. Some requires action in the field. Four topics that need to be addressed before the necessary education can occur are identified.
