Museum exhibition lighting: Effectiveness of subjective and objective evaluation measures

Christine Wilson Kesner, PhD

Consumer Services Department, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, PA 15705-1087, USA

This study determines the validity and reliability of subjective (observer-based, qualitative) and objective (instrument-based, quantitative) measures of museum exhibition lighting. The effectiveness of measures was determined using two different instruments, the Lighting Evaluation Scale and the Visitor Museum Lighting Survey, which were applied in art museums throughout the United States. Results suggested that objective measures are best for a single observer to evaluate a single gallery. Subjective measures can be effective to assess the status of exhibition lighting when averaged over many galleries, but are not reliable when applied by a single evaluator to a single gallery.
