Lighting: the metric 'seventies

British Lighting Industries Ltd

The British ten-year plan, from 1965 to 1975, for a changeover to decimal currency and metric weights and measures is reviewed and proposals for product rationalisation and dimensional co-ordination in building are discussed. The progress made in various sectors indicates the relatively small part played by lighting in the overall programme. A general report is given on progress in the construction industry, which plans for metric working to commence in 1970. Special problems affecting the use of fluorescent lamps in the modular spaces proposed for metric buildings are indicated. Metric SI education plans are summarised, and the need for metric retraining in industry is stressed. The recently published programme for the electrical industry is summarised in the Appendix.
